Author Spotlight + Interview: Krista & Becca Ritchie

What do owls do when they turn 1?

This owl, Doris, me, Hi, celebrates by interviewing Krista and Becca Ritchie.

I don't know if y'all know this but I love the Addicted series. I was recommened the first book, Addicted to You, THIS YEAR, and after that it all went to obsession (but in a good way.) Obsession can be good, right? Anywho, thank you both for taking the time to answer my questions.

Krista & Becca Ritchie write New Adult books that make you cringe, gasp, and go ooh-la-la. (If you do that sort of thing.) They are currently working on the spin-offs and final books in the Addicted series. Connect with them on twitter and their website.
                    Krista's:           Becca's:

Q. Lily and Lo really know how to mess with my emotions. They are are the most flawed but lovable fictional characters I have ever had the pleasure of reading about. How and why did you choose to write about addictions?
Becca: During the time, we were really interested in writing a book that focused on female sexuality. Slut shamming was a huge issue, and we wanted to take the challenge of writing a promiscuous female but make it even more complicated because she has a real, unhealthy problem. We knew it’d be hard for people to connect with Lily’s addiction because it’s so taboo and not as well-known, so we added in alcoholism to show how all addictions have some of the same components.

Krista: Yep, Becca said it perfectly! We also really wanted to challenge ourselves as writers. Having two unlikable characters and trying to make readers fall in love with them seemed like an interesting (and a little difficult task) that we wanted to take.

Q. Is there a message in your series that you want readers to grasp?
Becca: Be strong. We write college-aged romance, and we’re 23, so we know once you reach the cusp of graduating, it’s terrifying. Lo and Lily experience some of that unknown, and it does frighten them. I think whether you have addictions, are trying to figure what you love in life (Daisy), or are following your ambitions (Connor & Rose), be strong. You’ll make it.

Krista: And also that it’s okay to make mistakes. College and your twenties is like the biggest trial and error period of your life. We’ve made plenty of mistakes and we’re only 23. Our characters go through their ups and downs and they also f*ck up. Sometimes they may be a little stupid or vulnerable or insecure. That’s life. And like Becca said, as long as you dig deep and find some sort of strength, you’ll be fine.

Q. I have to know, where did the idea for Fizzle originate? (The way Lily drinks the soda makes me want to go buy a can.)
Becca: Krista created it! I think we were tossing out ideas for brands. We came up with Hale Co., a baby product company based off Johnson & Johnson, but we wanted something cooler for the Calloway girls. Krista chose soda, and we had to pick something that could compete with Pepsi and Coca-Cola. Fizzle is cool because it’s like Coke in that the actual drink is Fizz and Diet Fizz, not Fizzle.

Krista: I can’t take all the credit! Becca was the one who came up with the idea to have the Calloway family involved with a soda company. It was a brilliant choice. Now I’m craving to know what Fizz would taste like. In my dreams, it’s better than Diet Coke. And that’s a HUGE statement from me. I’m pretty much a full blown Diet Coke addict.

Q. So Krista and Becca . . . what's one of your addictions? (Mine is twitter, I can't live without it. Seriously)
Becca: TV. I have a huge addiction to television shows. And yes, reality tv is definitely on there. I think writing can be a bit of an addiction too at times. And of course reading, but that goes without saying :)

Krista: Oh, I accidentally just answered this. Diet Coke. Maybe a little bit of TV too, but definitely Diet Coke. It sustains me now. Otherwise, I am a zombie.

Q. Thrive and Addicted After All . . . Anything you can share with us yet? Like maybe a release date.
Becca: I wish! We don’t have release dates yet for either.

Krista: Not yet :(

(Okay one more question and that's it. I could seriously interview both of you forever and ever!)

Q. You've been reaped for The Hunger Games, who would you want as your partner?

Becca: I’m going to have to kill my partner, aren’t I? This is so sad! Okay, in a “Catching Fire” scenario where I don’t kill and we work together, I’d take “Finnick” because he’s strong (and hot).

Krista: Well, let’s be honest, I would die if I was reaped for the Hunger Games. I’m not a Katniss. Therefore, I’d need a guy that takes pity on me (I wouldn’t expect him to fall in love with me) and so maybe Peeta. Or how about Edward Cullen? Can we cross cast? Because he’d definitely beat everyone. Immortal. Vampire. Yeah, he’d outlast and hopefully take me with him. But since he’s “technically” dead, I’d be named victor. I know… I’ve thought way too hard about this question ;)

Quick Fire Round Q's:

Cake or pie
Becca: Ooh, cake. I don’t like pie crust that much.
Krista: Cake. Same as Becca. Pie crust is not my thing.

Truth or dare
Becca: Truth
Krista: Truth

Sky dive or bungee jump
Becca: Bungee!
Krista: Bungee. (We’re starting to sound like twins!)

Fair or theme park
Becca: Theme park. I love roller coasters!
Krista: Fair. FUNNEL CAKE. That is all.
