The strange war down south—with its rumors of gods and monsters—is over. And while sixteen-year-old Hallie and her sister wait to see who will return from the distant battlefield, they struggle to maintain their family farm.
When Hallie hires a veteran to help them, the war comes home in ways no one could have imagined, and soon Hallie is taking dangerous risks—and keeping. . .
An Inheritance of Ashes went up on Edelweiss some time in May and they didn't approve me until two months after. Yup, you read that right, I waited two agonizing months for a verdict and when I was finally approved I was ecstatic. You see when I read the description for this book I knew I had to get my greedy hands on it no matter the cost so thank you Publisher and Edelweiss for not making me commit a crime. Just imagine I could be in book jail right now. . .
The prologue of An Inheritance of Ashes is intense. The main character Hallie is hiding because her father and uncle Matthias are fighting over who gets to keep the farm. Unfortunately her father wins and Matthias has to leave. And before Matthias leaves he tells Hallie something very ominous that I immediately knew things were about to hit the fan.
Throughout the story Hallie encounters many challenges, from taking care of a farm to keeping secrets,to saving a town. Hallie was a well rounded character with a strong head on her shoulders and the fact that she was only sixteen made her stand out even more.
One of the many things I liked about An Inheritance of Ashes was the family and friend dynamics. The scenes between Hallie and her sister were heartbreaking and the whole time I wanted them to have their sisterly bond back and was not disappointed.
Also the creatures Leah Bobet created are icky and creepy and the way were entwined in the story is just awesome!
An Inheritance of Ashes was a slow paced book full of mystery and secrets that will leave you wanting to devour the book in one sitting. I loved that Leah Bobet took her time with the story-line and it paid off.
