A twisted young medical student kidnaps the girl of his dreams and embarks on a dark and delirious road trip across Brazil in the English-language debut of Brazil's most celebrated young crime writer.
Teo Avelar is a loner. He lives with his paraplegic mother and her dog in Rio de Janeiro, he doesn't have many friends, and the only time he feels honest human emotion is in the presence of his medical school cadaver—that is, until he meets Clarice. She's almost his exact opposite: exotic, spontaneous, unafraid to speak her mind. An aspiring screenwriter, she's working on a screenplay called Perfect Days about three friends who go on a road trip across Brazil in search of romance. Teo is obsessed. He begins to stalk her, first following her to her university, then to her home, and when she ultimately rejects him, he kidnaps her and they embark upon their very own twisted odyssey across Brazil, tracing the same route outlined in her screenplay. Through it all, Teo is certain that time is all he needs to prove to Clarice that they are made for each other, that time is all he needs to make her fall in love with him. But as the journey progresses, he digs himself deeper and deeper into a pit that he can't get out of, stopping at nothing to ensure that no one gets in the way of their life together. Both tense and lurid, and brimming with suspense from the very first page, Perfect Days is a psychological thriller in the vein of Patricia Highsmith's The Talented Mr. Ripley—a chilling journey in the passenger seat with a psychopath, and the English language debut of one of Brazil's most deliciously dark young writers.
My first impression of Perfect Days was not a good one to say the least. It was my first time reading a book by the Brazilian author who is known to be a well-known Crime novelist. The cover of the book did not say much, but boy was I in for a surprise! From the very beginning of the book, you can’t help but wonder how authors come up with such funny humor. The read is a little creepy and mysterious, but overall in my opinion humorous. We meet the main character Teo (medical student) in the very first chapter. Teo is obsessed with Gertrude (a corpse), who he has been working on for quite some time.  Teo is very protective of Gertrude and even finds it hard to believe that his time with her is over!

During the first few chapters, we learn that Teo takes care of his mother who was involved in a serious accident that leaves her in a wheelchair. I personally loved the way Teo seemed to care for his mother and protect her. But then things started to get a little bit creepy. Teo meets Clarice at a BBQ party and he is immediately attracted to her. He believes that Clarice likes him too, and even follows her. Things escalate extremely fast and before you know it, Teo decides to kidnap Clarice until she falls in love with him. I can only imagine what was going through this poor girls mind as she is being forced into staying with someone who is technically obsessed with her! This is where things start turning scary. Teo handcuffs, drugs, and even gags her!!!! He is in complete control of her life and I personally did not like this part of the book.

I don’t want to give too much more away, but I can tell you that this read is full of suspense and surprises! Montes Raphael did a wonderful job of keeping the reader interested and alert with all of the twists and turns in this phenomenal read. As a lover of romance and mystery this read places you inside the mind of what I call a stalker. If you are into mystery, suspense, and over all craziness this read will not disappoint. I look forward to reading more of Raphael books in the future!!
