Elena Martinez has hidden her eidetic memory all her life--or so she thinks. When powerful tech giant Aether Corporation selects her for a top-secret project, she can't say no. All she has to do is participate in a trip to the future to bring back data, and she'll be set for life.Elena joins a team of four other teens with special skills, including Adam, a science prodigy with his own reason for being there. But when the time travelers arrive in the future, something goes wrong and they break the only rule they were given: do not look into their own fates. Now they have twenty-four hours to get back to the present and find a way to stop a seemingly inevitable future from unfolding. With time running out and deadly secrets uncovered, Elena must use her eidetic memory, street smarts, and a growing trust in Adam to save her new friends and herself.
Owl Vanessa: What is your favorite line or scene from Future Shock?Elizabeth Briggs:
Favorite line: “The future is a noose around my neck that gets tighter with each passing minute.”
Favorite scene: The kiss in the rain!
Owl Vanessa: What are some of your favorite novels?Elizabeth Briggs: My all-time favorite books are the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. The book that inspired me to write was Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton. Some favorite YA science fiction books are These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner, Loop by Karen Akins, and Across The Universe by Beth Revis.
Owl Vanessa: Do you have any must haves while you’re writing?Elizabeth Briggs: My laptop and a comfy place to sit – that’s it!
Owl Vanessa: Without spoilers, were there any scenes you had to cut that you wished you could have kept?Elizabeth Briggs: I actually didn’t cut any scenes from the book! In fact, I added more scenes in revisions with my editor. This is because I had the book very tightly plotted down to the hour (since the book takes place mostly over 24 hours).
Owl Vanessa: Series or standalone? Why?Elizabeth Briggs: Both! I love standalone books because I like stories when they are wrapped up, and I hate having to wait for another book. But I LOVE reading an entire series when it’s already out because it lets me stay with the characters even longer.
Owl Vanessa: Print, audio or eBooks? Why?Elizabeth Briggs: I read both print and ebooks equally. I like the convenience of ebooks, but I also love the look and feel of a beautiful hardcover, either in my hands or on my bookshelf.
Owl Vanessa: Describe your book in 5 words?Elizabeth Briggs: Can they change their fate?
Owl Vanessa: Do you have any big plans for your release day?Elizabeth Briggs: On my release day I’ll be on a panel at the AWP conference in Los Angeles called “Treat Your Setting Like A Character.” That weekend I’ll be doing a launch party at Vroman’s bookstore here in LA with fellow authors Dana Elmendorf and Jessica Love!
