This electric cross-country thriller follows the game of cat and mouse between a girl on the run from a murder she witnessed—or committed?—and the boy who’s sent to kill her.Nicolette Holland is the girl everyone likes. Up for adventure. Loyal to a fault. And she’s pretty sure she can get away with anything...until a young woman is brutally murdered in the woods near Nicolette’s house. Which is why she has to disappear.Jack Manx has always been the stand-up guy with the killer last name. But straight A’s and athletic trophies can’t make people forget that his father was a hit man and his brother is doing time for armed assault. Just when Jack is about to graduate from his Las Vegas high school and head east for college, his brother pulls him into the family business with inescapable instructions: find this ruthless Nicolette Holland and get rid of her. Or else Jack and everyone he loves will pay the price. As Nicolette and Jack race to outsmart each other, tensions—and attractions—run high. Told in alternating voices, this tightly plotted mystery and tense love story challenges our assumptions about right and wrong, guilt and innocence, truth and lies.
How to Disappear is the first book that I read of author Ann Redisch Stampler. The cover pulled me in immediately. The synopsis had me intrigued right away. I received a physical copy of the book and fell in love with it even more. And then, there is the first sentence of the prologue “There is a body in the woods”. Right after reading the very first sentence I thought to myself “What am I getting myself into?!?” I knew right away I was in for a delicious read!
How To Disappear is fast paced and packed with unexpected twists and turns. One minute you are smooth sailing and the next minute your sailboat is taking in water at a rushing speed! I found myself not wanting to put the book down. The few times I had to put the book down all I wanted to do was pick it back up. I stayed up a couple of nights reading until my eyes betrayed me and closed by themselves!
The story is told from dual POV which makes this book outstanding! From the very first page you are hooked. One POV belongs to protagonist Nicolette who is absolutely badass!!! She exceeded all of my expectations for a female lead. I have to say, she is one the best female leads I’ve encountered in a while. The other POV belongs to Jack...who is “good boy” with a bad reputation. The plot thickens between these two as a game of cat and mouse develops. The chapters are short and they interchange between the characters which makes the story flow beautifully. I don’t want to give out spoilers...so here is the bottom line. If you enjoy mysteries, thrillers and fast paced action then you need to read How To Disappear. It is that simple!
