When it comes to relationships, Remy doesn't mess around. After all, she's learned all there is to know from her mother, who's currently working on husband number five. But there's something about Dexter that seems to defy all of Remy's rules. He certainly doesn't seem like Mr. Right. For some reason, however, Remy just can't seem to shake him. Could it be that Remy's starting to understand what those love songs are all about?
Sarah Dessen's books are like old friends. That is why I'm so happy our blog was chosen to participate in this campaign, leading up to Once and for All (which we preview below). This Lullaby, while not my favorite of her books, is still a book that I enjoy, especially because of the characters of Remy and Dexter. This is a re-read for me. The first time was probably back when it was first published.

Remy is multi-layered, feisty, streetwise, and just overall possesses a sense of awareness which I lacked when I was her age. She has no father figure in her life because you can't count the numerous husbands her mother goes through as one. But her mother has met a new man and this could be the end of the line although she highly doubts it.

At the same time Remy meets Dexter. I love Dexter so much. He's sensible, quirky, selfless, an optimistic type. But Remy has her heart feverishly closed to romance and the possibility of love. The romance isn't the main focus of the story as Remy is battling with other issues such as her family, college, and unresolved issues over her musician dad. The title of the book being the same title of a song her father wrote when she was born.

I like that Remy is authentic. She's tough but she also makes enough mistakes to make her a well-rounded, flawed human being. Dessen also has a knack for focusing on big picture themes. This book truly shows us what it is to love and be loved and everything that happens in between.
Once and for All
As bubbly as champagne and delectable as wedding cake, Once and for All, Sarah Dessen's thirteenth novel, is set in the world of wedding planning, where crises are routine.

Louna, daughter of famed wedding planner Natalie Barrett, has seen every sort of wedding: on the beach, at historic mansions, in fancy hotels and clubs. Perhaps that's why she's cynical about happily-ever-after endings, especially since her own first love ended tragically. When Louna meets charming, happy-go-lucky serial dater Ambrose, she holds him at arm's length. But Ambrose isn't about to be discouraged, now that he's met the one girl he really wants. Sarah Dessen’s many, many fans will adore her latest, a richly satisfying, enormously entertaining story that has everything—humor, romance, and an ending both happy and imperfect, just like life itself.
