Lyra Bevacqua is content to run wild among the scholars of Jordan College, with her daemon familiar always by her side. But the arrival of her fearsome uncle, Lord Asriel, draws her to the heart of a terrible struggle - a struggle born of Gobblers and stolen children, witch clans and armored bears. And as she hurtles toward danger in the cold far North, Lyra never suspects the shocking truth: she alone is destined to win, or to lose, this more-than-mortal battle.

The Golden Compass has been on my to-be-read list for so long. But like other hyped books, I was hesitant to read it. I can see the hype. I can see why this book is hailed as a modern fantasy classic. It's a brilliant one and I'm so happy I finally had the opportunity to enjoy it. There's so much to unpack and so much to enjoy about this book.
Lyra is an enjoyable character to follow. She's headstrong and brave but there's an innocence about her that makes you root for her even when she could use a reality check. The people that she comes across and interacts with become their own memorable characters and not just pawns in the story. I really appreciated this part of the book. Though many characters come and go, they each have a story to tell without taking away from Lyra and the main story.
The world-building was fantastic and one of my favorite elements of the story. It was so well done. There was enough world-building to understand the world, but to not take away and distract from the story. The world, characters, story was all so fantastical; I loved it.
This is a book that I look forward to reading with my children. I'm so happy I finally dived into this series. And I can't wait to continue on. Especially with a new book from Philip Pullman coming this fall that is set in this same world, called The Book of Dust. Be sure to check it out!
