On her eighteenth birthday, Princess Evelayn of Eadrolan, the Light Kingdom, can finally access the full range of her magical powers. The light looks brighter, the air is sharper, and the energy she can draw when fighting feels almost limitless.
But while her mother, the queen, remains busy at the war front, in the Dark Kingdom of Dorjhalon, the corrupt king is plotting. King Bain wants control of both kingdoms, and his plan will fling Evelayn onto the throne much sooner than she expected.
In order to defeat Bain and his sons, Evelayn will quickly have to come into her ability to shapeshift, and rely on the alluring Lord Tanvir. But not everyone is what they seem, and the balance between the Light and Dark comes at a steep price.
Dark Breaks the Dawn packs a big punch for a fantasy (fairy tale retelling) novel that is just over 300 pages long! I applaud Sara B. Larson being able to pull this book off the way she did. That speaks volumes to her talent as a storyteller.

I loved that Dark Breaks the Dawn gives you multiple character perspectives, even those of the villain(s)! This omniscient storytelling really gives you good insight into the world and characters. This was smart on Sara B. Larson's part, because without it, a smidgen over 300 pages would not have been enough to pull together this retelling of Swan Lake.

I really loved the world and characters created in Dark Breaks the Dawn. The magic and powers and talents that the characters possessed were fabulous.  The descriptions of the characters were stunning. I loved that the citizens of the Light Kingdom all had skin and eye and hair colors that occurred in Summer and Spring. All shades of brown and orange and yellow and and red. Conversely, the citizens of the the Dark Kingdom have eye and hair and skin colors you would see in the Winter, like grays and blues and whites.

Our main character Evelayn has been training since she was a young girl to become the next queen of her kingdom. She has been practicing not only magic, but training in fighting and weaponry as well. Upon the death of her mother, she ascends to the throne and must quickly learn who she can trust, while keeping her true self hidden behind the visage of Queen of the Light Kingdom, she must show no weakness.

There is a bit of a love interest between Evelayn and Tanvir, but none of that instalove nonsense. Evelayn feels inexplicably drawn to Tanvir, but she does not act on her feelings or emotions. She is wary that Tanvir may just be after the crown rather than have true feelings for her, so she keeps him at a distance, which makes for some really good tension.

Overall, I enjoyed the first installment of this duology, and am looking forward to finding out how it all ends in the next book.
SARA B. LARSON is the author of the acclaimed young adult fantasy Defy trilogy: Defy, Ignite, and Endure. She can’t remember a time when she didn’t write books—although she now uses a computer instead of a Little Mermaid notebook. Sara lives in Utah with her husband and their children. She writes in brief snippets throughout the day (while mourning the loss of nap time) and the quiet hours when most people are sleeping. Her husband claims she should have a degree in “the art of multitasking.” When she’s not mothering or writing, you can often find her at the gym repenting of her sugar addiction.
