Adam Thorn doesn’t know it yet, but today will change his life. Between his religious family, a deeply unpleasant ultimatum from his boss, and his own unrequited love for his sort-of ex, Enzo, it seems as though Adam’s life is falling apart.  At least he has two people to keep him sane: his new boyfriend (he does love Linus, doesn’t he?) and his best friend, Angela. But all day long, old memories and new heartaches come crashing together, throwing Adam’s life into chaos. The bindings of his world are coming untied one by one; yet in spite of everything he has to let go, he may also find freedom in the release.

I discovered Patrick Ness in class last semester and there are not enough words to use to show how thankful I am for this assignment. Through this assignment I was able to connect with another author that I have added to my auto buy list. Have you read Patrick Ness yet? Yes...No? Whatever your answer, this is a book that should not be skipped as it could be a top book for me in 2017!

Following Adam Thorn in this messy yet so raw and emotional read, Ness takes us on an adventure that really delves into heavy topics of love, religion, family and so much more. However, this is not just a contemporary read. While thinking you are coming in for one story, you are actually coming in to hear two stories. I cannot say if  you might lean more towards one than the other but they both have their parts in this book.

In regards to the story, I think I was able to connect with this on a more personal level than I have had with Ness's other books. The internal struggle that Adam faces throughout the novel is so relatable, especially to some teens today. I know that some of his thoughts were some thoughts I had on my own. Fortunately I never had to deal with a boss like his and I am not upset at that.

Adam and his relationship with Linus is in this very fragile state right now. Trying to lay out everything on the table on he feels seems hard but the possibility of you have feelings with your ex makes it just a little bit harder. Although the moments where it was just Linus and Adam were the moments that hit a chord.

Overall Patrick Ness won me over once more. I know there are still some books that I need to read and I cannot wait to dive into my next Ness read. If you are looking for a book with a story that is not what you would expect, this is the book for you.

  1. I have yet to read a Patrick Ness book but I have heard great things! I am glad you loved this one!
