Top Ten Tuesday: Seven Impulsive Things I've Done for the Love of Books

Top Ten Tuesdays (TTT) is a weekly event now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's TTT is: Outrageous Things I've Done for the Love of Books. My version: Impulsive Things I've Done for the Love of Books.
When I was trying to think of things for this list, I was having a hard time. Nothing I've done seems so outrageous, but the things I was thinking of were more impulsive. Things I did at the last minute or ended up doing on the spot.  I would love to know if you have done any of these things too, or something that you've done for your love of books!

Stayed up way too late to finish a book
Okay, I know that we have probably all done this but I had to include it because those moments when I have to get up earlier but stayed up too late... the book was worth it.

Drove over an hour to get a book
You know when you just need that book right now and the only store that has it in stock it is over an hour away, so you go because you just have to have it. I have done this maybe once and now I find myself more patient, there's so many books to read in the meantime!

Pulled out a book and read at a family gathering
I love seeing my family, but if I can't stop thinking about the book I'm reading, I sometimes will sneak away and read a little bit.

Went to multiple libraries in one day
I used to live in a large city that had libraries around just 20 minutes or so from each other. A few times, I would make a day of it and visit a few libraries and see what I could find on their shelves.

Put too many books on hold at once
I used to just put holds on whatever I was interested in and not pay much attention. A few times of having 10 books or more come (and then most getting returned unread) in has slowed me down now, and made me more intentional about what I put on hold and how many books I already have on hold.

Maxed out my library card
At one of my previous libraries, I went to the counter with a stack of books only to find my card didn't work. When I asked the librarian, I found out that my library card was maxed out.. I could only check out 30 items. I had no idea that I had 30 items checked out or that there was a limit! I was slightly embarrassed but it was a good wakeup call that I needed to get reading!
My current library doesn't have a limit on how many things can be checked out, which is pretty cool, but I still find myself keeping an eye on how many things I have checked out.

When traveling, I left other things behind so I could fit more books
One year at ALA, I had run out of room for books, so I left other things behind just so I could fit more books in. I didn't leave behind anything super important, just totes and other things I received at the conference that weren't as important as the books.

  2. Ha, I for sure have read books at family gatherings, like you. xD I've sort of become known for it by now. I made the same mistake with holds that you did. It's the sort of thing you have to learn the hard way, I do believe. I had about 10 books out at once and my husband felt the need to stage an intervention. xD Now, I just go once a week and take out what I think I can get through during the week.

    Here's my TTT post.

  3. Fun list! Back in the day, pre-children, I'd stay up late too many nights, reading and be grumpy as anything at work :) Visiting multiple libraries sounds such fun, I tend to check online to see which ones have the books I want, usually because I'm pressed for time, but I think I'll go on a library-crawl just for the heck of it and see what I discover.

  4. I'm with you on the too many books on hold. My current library system actually limits the amount I can place holds on. I was a bit peeved about this at first, but I'm grateful for it now.

  7. Heehee! Nice! I did drive almost 2 hours once to go to the nearest Books a Million to get a special edition of ACOWAR! I browsed the store while I was at it to make sure I was saving myself that shipping charge! LOL! Plus online was sold out of the book so I was really doing myself a favor! ;)

    Here's my Tuesday Post

    Have a GREAT day!
