Top Ten Tuesday: Things That Make Me Pick Up a Book

Top Ten Tuesdays (TTT) is a weekly event now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's TTT is: Things That Make Me Pick Up a Book. I'm such a mood reader that the things that make me pick up a book are usually changing depending on my mood. When I started thinking about this topic, however, I found that there were a few things that would definitely hook me onto the book. Please let me know if you have any recommendations, or books you know that fit any of these categories!

Hate to love romance
This is one of my favorite romance tropes, and one that will always grab my attention to a book.
like: The Hating Game by Sally Thorne, The Winner's Curse series by Marie Rutkoski

Ancient Rome setting
I have been searching for more books set in the era since I read and loved a series set during this time.
like: The Empress of Rome series by Kate Quinn

Traveling/Backpacking
I love books where the characters are traveling or backpacking somewhere. It's fun to live vicariously through them.
like: Just One Day by Gayle Forman

Whimsical
I have loved mostly all of the books that have a sort of whimsical feel to it, whether it be the story, setting or characters.
like: Furthermore by Tahereh Mafi, The Edge Chronicles by Paul Stewart

"Close to home"
Anything that sounds familiar to my life always peeks my interest. Settings close to mine or places I've been, stories about sisters, stories that are about motherhood.

Set in the 1920s
I have such a fascination with the 1920s, that anything set during that era always captures my attention.
like: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Diviners by Libba Bray

Family sagas
I've found myself really loving family sagas. Stories/series that I can follow one family through generations have been fun to follow and I always end up feeling so close to the characters.
like: The Sevenwaters series by Juliet Marillier, Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi,

Survival stories
I'm such a sucker for any kind of survival story. I'm so curious as to how people survive dangerous situations. I usually read these stories fast because I can't wait to see what happens next. I especially enjoy island survival, or ocean survival because these seems kind of terrifying at the same time!
like: On the Island by Tracey Garvis Graves, The Raft by S.A. Bodeen

Pirates
I haven't read a book about pirates that I haven't enjoyed. Which has me wanting to read all the pirate books.
like: To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo, Shades of Magic series by V.E. Schwab, Daughter of a Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller,

Familiarity
This is kind of given.. I am drawn to books that are by favorite authors, or books I've heard recommendations for. Sometimes simply hearing the title somewhere or if a book/author sounds familiar, then I'll check it out.

  1. Ooh nice reasons! Ancient Roman setting sounds cool! I don't think I've read too many with that setting!
